BACKGROUND
Located in sunny northeast San Diego County, Mission Resource Conservation District (MRCD) is a special district that assists landowners and managers, government agencies, and others to voluntarily protect, restore, and enhance natural resources on public and private lands. Resource Conservation Districts across California serve as local hubs for conservation, connecting people with the technical, financial and educational assistance they need to conserve and manage natural resources. A defining characteristic of RCDs is that we provide non-regulatory, confidential, free assistance.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
MRCD seeks an Agriculture Specialist to support MRCD’s agriculture programs fostering agricultural resiliency and climate change mitigation. This position will play a vital role with MRCD’s goals for accelerating producer adoption of carbon farming practices, developing carbon sequestration programming, and serving as an educational resource to a range of stakeholders.
The Agriculture Specialist will engage with and provide technical assistance to growers, land managers, local and regional ag organizations and agencies. This position will support water management and carbon farming and healthy soils practices with our grant-funded programs, and coordinate with water and soil health networks and other critical regional stakeholders on cumulative program benefits and outcomes. Work includes technical assistance for SDCWA ag irrigation evaluations and water management, CropSWAP, NRCS RCPP conservation efforts and healthy soils support. Other work will include designing and coordinating implementation of carbon drawdown projects, conducting outreach and education, and assisting as needed with other RCD projects.

The Agriculture Specialist will report to the Agriculture Manager and the District Manager.

Full Time - 40 hours a week, rate depending on experience.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist the Ag Manager with project-related tasks including coordinating with stakeholders and customers; supporting project implementation, documentation, and administration of contracts; tracking budgets; and preparing reports. The Specialist will be trained in all required protocols.

• Schedule and assist landowners with requests for technical assistance.
• Analyze irrigation systems and collect data in the field, data entry, track and analyze individual and cumulative benefits of carbon farming practices, equipment preparation and maintaining supplies.
• Outreach and technical assistance to growers and community members to include organizing workshops, field days, training courses and webinars.
• Help prepare and coordinate grant applications.

The ideal candidate will be a generalist with the ability to work across disciplines, with strong technical, administrative, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree with focus on agriculture, conservation, environmental studies, natural sciences, resource management, or related field.
• Two or more years professional experience
• Demonstrated interest and experience in agriculture or conservation
• Ability to work with a variety of people with diverse interests and temperaments
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Basic proficiency with ArcGIS and GPS
• Highly organized and motivated self-starter with the ability to prioritize
• Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
• Physically able to work in the field (hiking across farms and wild lands, lifting, carrying supplies and equipment, planting, etcetera) during all seasons
• Strong desire to learn, creativity, sense of humor, flexibility and a “can do” attitude
• Valid California driver’s license, clean driving record, and current auto insurance.

Desired Qualifications
• Experience working with agricultural operations and/or environmental organizations
• Experience with reporting and grant writing
• Knowledge of irrigation systems
• An understanding of soil science and the economics of agriculture
• Knowledge of GIS mapping software.

COMPENSATION
Financial compensation will be commensurate with applicable experience, with a competitive benefits package after a 3-month probationary period. Employees have a flexible work schedule with holidays off and begin accruing paid time off after the probationary period.
