We are in search of an upbeat individual that is willing to work hard and join our team.
Responsibilities change throughout the year with winters more focused on animal handling, snow removal, and maintenance with summers more focused on fabrication projects, facilities, and equipment maintenance.
This person must be patient and do well under stressful situations. This is a physically demanding job, being on your feet throughout the day, outdoors in all weather conditions
Applicant will be working directly under the herd manager and be responsible for the herd in her absence. Work with animals is hands-on and requires patience and confidence. This person will also be responsible for all maintenance of all machinery (gas, diesel, hydraulic, and small engine), welding, carpentry, buildings, facilities, and grounds.
Salary: $17-$22/hour, based on experience
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
Mechanical:
Maintaining, repairing, and operating of farm equipment; gas, diesel, electric, hydraulic, etc.
Snow removal with snowblower, tractor, skid steer, and shovel
Summer maintenance of lawns and landscaping
Building and fabrication; welding, carpentry, fencing, etc.
Carrying out maintenance and repair of all pastures, fences, feeders, and buildings
Husbandry:
Monitoring and caring for the overall health of the herd which includes:
Feeding/Watering
Weighing
Maintaining feed, weight, health, and breeding records
Handling of animals
Taming, weaning, and socializing of calves
Setting of harems for breeding
Working intensively with adult herd
Combing and collection of qiviut
Assisting in veterinary care
Hoof/Horn trimming
Covering the duties of the Herd Manager during vacation or other absence
Carrying out any other tasks assigned by the Farm Manager or Executive Director
Working as part of a larger team of farm and Interpretive staff to promote the positive image of the Musk Ox Farm
