Faculty Highlight: William (Bill) Townsend
Assistant Professor Bill Townsend recently joined Cal Poly’s Agribusiness Department after earning a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Oklahoma, where his research explored the impact of U.S. and Mexico avocado trade on crime and water quality in Mexico.
Originally from Missouri, he has lived in Denver, Washington, D.C., Mexico, Spain and Oklahoma before settling in San Luis Obispo.
Now teaching agricultural economics, agricultural policy and data analysis, Townsend finds meaning in helping students connect coursework to real-world issues, sharing that “teaching students economics, statistics and how these subjects impact our everyday lives brings me a lot of satisfaction throughout my day.”
He also highlighted students’ strong “engagement and academic curiosity” as a standout part of his experience. Looking ahead, he hopes to develop international programs in Mexico and Spain that bring together agriculture, economics and culture.
As he settles into Cal Poly, Townsend noted that “it’s extremely difficult to be unhappy in a place as beautiful as SLO and with as wonderful faculty and students,” adding that he is “loving the journey” as a new professor.
