Open House and Farmers’ Market

Cal Poly’s Open House marked a milestone for the Agribusiness Department this year, highlighting its Learn by Doing philosophy in a new way. For the first time, student startups were featured at the Agribusiness booth, giving visitors a look at how students apply classroom learning to real-world business ventures.

The experience helped prospective students, families and community members see the impact of experiential learning within the program.

With more than 200 people attending Agribusiness Open House activities, including strong engagement at the Farmers’ Market booth in downtown San Luis Obispo, students played a key role in showcasing their experiences. Through conversations, product displays and personal stories, they demonstrated how the program prepares them for careers in agriculture and business.

“I had a great time volunteering at Open House,” said Leightyn Ferrell, a second-year agricultural business major. “I enjoyed talking with prospective students and helping them understand how to weave their interests into their educational experience at Cal Poly. I think Open House is such a valuable event for experiencing the campus culture and what Cal Poly has to offer.”

The event highlighted student innovation and reinforced the department’s commitment to practical, career-ready education.
