Dr. Christiane Schroeter, Ph.D.
Dr. Christiane Schroeter works as a Professor in the Agribusiness Department, where she teaches Food Marketing, Global Agricultural Marketing, and Innovation & Entrepreneurship in Agriculture. Dr. Schroeter graduated with her Ph.D. from Purdue University in Agricultural Economics. Her dissertation, which was the recipient of the Outstanding Dissertation Award, employed a microeconomic framework to determine the impact of food price and policy changes on obesity. Dr. Schroeter has published peer-reviewed articles in journals such as the Journal of Health Economics (2009 Best Economics Paper Award in Food Safety and Nutrition by the Agricultural & Applied Economics Association), the International Journal of Consumer Studies, and the Journal for Advancement of Marketing Education.
As the first Faculty Fellow for Cal Poly’s Center of Innovation & Entrepreneurship (CIE) from Cal Poly’s College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences (CAFES), she has inspired many students to pursue entrepreneurial pathways. In recognition for her teaching excellence, Dr. Schroeter has been bestowed awards by CAFES, the Western Agricultural Economics Association (WAEA), and the North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture (NACTA). In 2019, her colleagues selected her for the Agribusiness Faculty Award for Service Excellence.
In her class, Innovation & Entrepreneurship in Agriculture, which also serves as an elective for the Entrepreneurship Minor, she sees a large number of students who are interested in innovation and entrepreneurship in the food supply chain. Cal Poly's Learn by Doing approach serves as the perfect breeding ground to student's entrepreneurial efforts by bridging the gap between theory and application. As such, students first identify business opportunities based on current issues in food & agriculture. Then, the students work on customer development by going out to collect consumer insights based on their initial idea for the business opportunity. Dr. Schroeter aims to connect any interested students to the CIE innovation programs, such as the Innovation Quest, the Hatchery, and the Accelerator, so that they further immerse into the entrepreneurial process and launch their business ideas.
Dr. Schroeter loves to spend her free time with her family at the beautiful Central Coast and traveling. She enjoys teaching fitness classes at the Cal Poly Rec Center and she is passionate about helping others live a healthy lifestyle.
