Students Engage with Industry Partners at International Fresh Produce Association Meeting

To provide opportunities for students to engage directly with industry, Cal Poly’s Agribusiness Department organized students to partner with industries at the International Fresh Produce Association (IFPA) annual trade show in 2023 and 2024.

In return for the students assisting with booths and other tasks at the show, the companies attending or exhibiting at the show sponsor the students’ travel and participation in the conference.

“Attending IFPA the last two years, I was able to gain so much experience, meeting industry professionals and networking, which has helped me gain confidence in other professional settings as well,” said third-year agricultural business major Audrey Johnson.

The partnership was initiated by Professor Ricky Volpe, who modeled it after a similar program he has run with the California Grocers Association since 2014.

“I love creating opportunities for students outside the classroom because they take these experiences with them for the rest of their lives,” Volpe said. “In conversations with industry professionals and alumni, students get to truly understand the career opportunities available to them.”

Not only do the students benefit from working with industry leaders, but industry sponsors also benefit.

“Cal Poly agribusiness students have consistently been among Markon's top hires” said Nelia Alamo, vice president for marketing at Markon and chair of the Agribusiness Department’s Industry Advisory Council. “The IFPA program offers a valuable opportunity for us to connect with students early in their academic journey, build relationships and explore career goals.”
